Four Simple Ways to Create a Healthier Home Environment

Little did you know that health encompasses far more than what is on your table. Your physical activity, relationships, career, and spirituality are crucial to your overall well-being. That’s why Health Coaches like me refer to them as primary foods.

Your home environment contributes to them exceptionally. Since you spend considerable time there, it should contribute to your health and happiness rather than negatively affect them.

Those are the 4 ways to create a healthier and happier home environment:

1. Dusting.

Did you know that the dust in your home can contain harmful chemicals like phthalates, flame retardants, and phenols? To maintain a healthier environment, it's important to remove dust regularly. However, dry dusting can spread dust particles into the air. Instead, use a wet mop on hard floors, microfiber or damp cloths on furniture, and a vacuum cleaner to effectively capture and remove dust with minimal disturbance. This approach helps to absorb and eliminate dust more efficiently.

2. Shopping.

To minimize toxins in your home, be mindful of your purchases. Many plastics, such as those used in food containers, children's toys, and vinyl shower curtains, are linked to health issues like hormone disruption, behavioral changes, and even cancer. Additionally, carpets, paint, and furniture can release harmful gases, while synthetic materials in clothing can be absorbed into your skin.

The goal is not to avoid all purchases or become overly anxious but to make more informed choices. Opt for natural or organic fibers, use glass or ceramic food containers, and choose BPA-free and non-PVC plastics. Consider making your own cleaning products and, when possible, evaluate whether you truly need to buy something new.

3. Greenery.

Houseplants offer immense benefits for our mind, body, and soul! They help remove toxins from the air and reduce dust accumulation, release oxygen, and humidify the air. Additionally, they can lower stress levels, improve moods, and even alleviate pain and discomfort. Studies suggest that houseplants can enhance productivity and sharpen our attention span.

Beyond these advantages, houseplants bring a touch of nature indoors, fostering a sense of balance and tranquility. They make our homes look inviting, fresh, and clean, creating a pleasant and calming environment.

4. Wellness zones.

Many of us share our homes with others, which means we can't always control every aspect of our environment. However, you can create your own special pockets of wellness—small spaces designed to make you feel healthy, calm, and rejuvenated.

For example, transform a corner of your bedroom into a meditation sanctuary with candles, crystals, and a singing bowl. In the kitchen, dedicate a cupboard or drawer to your favorite superfoods, herbs, and teas. In the living room, set up a cozy nook with a cushion, a small table adorned with a plant, and your favorite essential oils.

The idea is to establish these wellness zones where you can retreat to find balance and grounding whenever you need it.

Additional Ideas to Maintain a Healthy Home Environment:

  • Invest in an Air Purifier — If you live in a city, an air purifier can help reduce indoor pollutants and improve air quality.
  • Communicate Your Wellness Goals — Share your intentions for a healthy home with those you live with to foster a supportive environment.
  • Leave Outdoor Shoes at the Door — Avoid wearing outdoor shoes inside to minimize the tracking of dirt and pollutants.
  • Clean Up After Pets — Regularly clean areas where pets spend time to maintain hygiene and reduce allergens.
  • Declutter Regularly — Clear out old clutter and organize "piles" to create a tidy and inviting space.
  • Ventilate Your Home — Open windows regularly to let in fresh air, even during colder months.
