
The dangers to overweight people are yet to be discovered and studied. Many of the phenomena are discoveries that completely change the existing understanding in medicine.
Looking for an answer to the chicken and egg mystery is pointless, as the subjects suffer either way. On the one hand, every pound in excess of body weight increases the knee load by 4 lb. On the other hand, the excessive weight is linked to a number of diseases like Alzheimer's, depression and cancer.
Recent studies have found a direct link to the function of dopamine, the hormone of pleasure. By increasing body weight the nerve receptors becoming less susceptive to it, which begins to a vicious circle of less movement, more food inevitably.
When it comes to motivation, I cannot help mentioning the Japanese method kaizen (改善, improvement). It simply states that for every big task for us, even a minute of effort in the desired direction helps realizing it. So, logically, achieving success always begins with a small step. All it takes is to do it. The hope kaizen gives is that every effort pays off: at first it will cost you only a minute, two pushups, three sit-ups, or 10 meters in the pool.
I was like this when I started to dust off my skills in the swimming pool. In the beginning, under my coach supervision, I exercised in breathing technics; for months I was doing the same exercises over and over again. But when I found myself alone in the swimming pool corridor, I realized how useful they were. Then exercises with a pool buoy followed, to focus on the legs and the arms movements. Thus, I reached that wonderful moment when -- a couple of weeks ago -- I swam butterfly style my first full pool length (50 meters) - a thing I haven’t even dreamt of.

That -- combined with home cooking -- empowers the body in a unique way by crowding out the need for junk and excessive consumption of sugar or salt. The motion memory combined with a variety of small challenges: a short stroll in the park, climbing the stairs he said if using the lift/elevator, or avoiding city transport condition permit, give the body an incredible opportunity to be fit for years to come.
