Slow and Mindful Eating

So often we eat mindlessly. We stuff food into our mouths while working on the computer, watching TV, or when we’re on the run. The pleasure of eating lies in slowing down and fully experiencing all of the elements of food.

Take some time to explore each of the following during your next meal and notice the difference. The main thing is to have fun, learn something, and understand yourself better.

Sight
Look at your food and study it carefully without naming it. Can you see the water, the rain, and the sunlight within the food?

Smell
Bring the food closer to your nose. Without naming the scent, experience smelling the food and then describe what it smells like.

Physiological reaction
Turn your senses inward. Begin to notice that saliva is produced, even though you haven’t yet put the food in your mouth

Touch
Touch your food and explore what it feels like.

Movement coordination
How does your hand know how to move food to the mouth? Nothing enters it without the participation of the tongue, which knows which side it is chewing on. See how it pushes food between the teeth. It's amazing.

Taste
Take a few bites and stop to experience what is happening. An inevitable explosion of flavors follows. Describe them in words and enjoy them. Only then start chewing slowly.

Texture
In the process of chewing, the tastes and texture change. When you realize the structure of food, the taste has mostly passed.

Swallow
When you catch the urge to swallow, follow it to your stomach, feel your whole body and accept that your body is now just one bite heavier.

Breath
And now stop for a moment or two and taste your breath. Pay the same attention to the inhalation as you have already done with the sight, touch, smell and taste of the food.

Silence
Be silent. Enjoy the moment and give it your attention.
