One effective way to enhance your chances of achieving your goals is by harnessing the power of visualization. This technique involves mentally imagining and immersing yourself in the desired outcome, infusing it with depth and mental energy.
Visualization, a technique that uses mental images to achieve desired outcomes, is not a novel or esoteric concept. Have you ever imagined your upcoming vacation or relived a joyful past experience? Creating those mental pictures is a natural and powerful aspect of our working minds!
Focusing your mental imagery on your desired outcomes can significantly enhance motivation, boost self-confidence, improve your mood, and cultivate behaviors conducive to success. This technique, which has been practiced in harmony with meditation for centuries, has even demonstrated its efficacy in elevating the performance of professional athletes.
Here are 3 simple steps to visualizing with intention:
- Create an image in your mind of what you want. Connect with your innermost desires for true fulfillment and happiness.
- Be specific. Imagine any physical sensations, the presence of others, scents, sounds, and other details relevant to the future you strive to realize.
- Visualize often. Good times to visualize include nightly as you’re falling asleep, or when you’re waiting in line at the grocery store. At least once per day will help you stay motivated to move closer and closer to your goal.
Visualization is one of the first exercises I present to my clients. In NLP (neurolinguistic programming) it’s associated with the Anchor tool.
Another application of visualization is to improve your mood. Here is what to do:
- When you’re at peace, create an imaginary place called the Happiness Drawer in the vicinity of your fourth chakra. In this drawer, you’ll keep all your happy memories—pictures, scenes, experiences, and feelings—as vivid snapshots of pure bliss.
- When you feel down, low, or disappointed, open the Happiness Drawer and pick up a given snapshot and go through the memory again, and again, and again, until you recharge your happy place;
- Enjoy the state of reliving this happy moment as if it happens to you right now and profit from the emotions and how you feel.
It works by pulling yourself towards a safe and happy place away from the danger of the low and turbulent present you might get into. This is exactly how an anchor is used to bring a ship back to safe waters. Hence, this exercise is aptly called Anchor.
