Compote de pommes (Applesauce)

My family has it in the yogurt for breakfast instead of a sweetener. If the apples are sweet enough, you may skip the sugar entirely; if they are sour, you can even increase it a bit. Eating it, you could bring up the kids to enjoy apples and add honey prior to serving it to save their grimaces.

Ingredients

  • 1 kg of apples;
  • ½ tsp water;
  • 2 tbsp. sugar (optional);
  • Vanilla or cinnamon (optional)

Directions

  1. Rinse and peel the apples well from their core;
  2. Cut them into cubes and place them in a suitable pot;
  3. Sprinkle sugar and add water. Add spices, if you'd like so;
  4. Cook over moderate heat until soft (15-20 minutes);
  5. Mash with a fork or puree (as desired);
  6. Store tightly closed in the fridge for up to 1 week (if it lasts so long)
